Chamber Opera Ensemble • Berlin
World Classics of Opera.
Ukrainian Masterpieces.
A Sound Like No Other.
Solo Semble is a Berlin-based chamber opera ensemble that, at the highest academic level, opens doors that have remained closed for far too long. We bring to the stage the very best that Europe has produced—from Handel to Strauss. Rooted in our heritage and profound expertise, we are the only ensemble in Berlin presenting Ukrainian operatic heritage at the same level of excellence.
While our foundation rests on the global classical tradition, our true mission is the rediscovery of forgotten masterpieces. During the very same era when Mozart was shaping his style in Vienna, composers such as Maxim Berezovsky and Dmytro Bortniansky were mastering the art of composition in Bologna and Venice. They created music of the same exceptional European caliber—works that the West subsequently and quietly forgot. Solo Semble returns these great names to where they belong: sharing the stage as equal geniuses alongside the established classics. To span centuries of musical history, the ensemble also integrates contemporary works, forging a living bridge between the heritage of the past and the sound of the present.
To make the monumental heritage of musical theater accessible even beyond the grand opera houses, Solo Semble translates it into a highly precise, intimate format. Through exclusive, bespoke chamber arrangements—crafted specifically for our ensemble—our performances remain immensely flexible: ranging from a nuanced dialogue with piano accompaniment to the rich, dense sound of a twelve-piece chamber ensemble. Thus, every program becomes a unique voyage of discovery, taking place wherever grand opera is otherwise rarely heard.
The cornerstone of this vision is built upon extraordinary voices from leading opera houses: Roman Poboinyi, Daria Bardash, and Vadym Bardash. Operating as an independent, non-profit artistic initiative under the artistic direction of its founder, Daria Bardash—a visionary establishing a distinct cultural institution in Berlin—the project thrives through the trust and support of foundations and patrons. We extend our special gratitude to our distinguished sponsors, including the arts patron Catherine von Fürstenberg-Dussmann.
